Computing
Computing Curriculum
We use the KAPOW Primary scheme of learning for Computing.
The scheme is categorised into five key areas:
- Computing systems and networks
- Programming
- Creating media
- Data handling
- Online safety
We return to these key areas each year, building on prior learning.
Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work has been designed as a spiral curriculum with the following key principles in mind:
Cyclical: Pupils revisit the five key areas throughout KS1 and KS2.
Increasing depth: Each time a key area is revisited, it is covered with greater complexity.
Prior knowledge: Upon returning to each key area, prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build on previous foundations, rather than starting again.
The long-term overview shows the units taught for each phase of school.

Online safety
We use the KAPOW scheme of learning to support us in teaching the online safety aspect of the computing curriculum. The online safety units are taught during the first two weeks of September across KS1 and KS2. Once children have learnt this key knowledge, they are provided with weekly retrieval opportunities to ensure this knowledge is retained in the long-term memory. Further opportunities to retrieve and develop this knowledge and understanding are provided on days such as 'Safer Internet Day'.
We intend for children to have a thorough understanding of online safety and regularly revisit key messages during computing lessons each week, such as learning that if something makes them feel uncomfortable or scared online, they should block it or report it, check the device and privacy settings and tell a trusted adult.
We have mapped out the composite and component knowledge for online safety that we expect the children to know and remember.
